Fierce battle raging for leadership of Rochdale Council

Date published: 10 December 2017

The decision as to who becomes the next leader of the local Labour Party, and hence the leader of Rochdale Borough Council, following the decision by Councillor Richard Farnell to stand down, will be taken by councillors at a Labour group meeting on Monday evening.

Definitely in the contest are Councillor Jacqui Beswick and Councillor Allen Brett. It is understood that Councillor Neil Emmott is considering throwing his hat in the ring, though the reality is he would not command anything like the support needed to be a serious contender.

The choice will therefore be between councillors Beswick and Brett and a fierce battle is going on in the background between the two camps seeking support from the Labour councillors who will decide who leads the party, and the Council, going forward.

We asked the two main protagonists to comment...

Jacqui Beswick said: "I believe the leadership of the council and the local Labour Party is about much more than the macho politics we have experienced over the past years.

"I am proud to be a mum and a grandmother always putting my family and children first.

"Politics is both hard and harsh, but I believe we can put a human face to politics and that is better for all in our community.

"The past horrors of Rochdale politics needs to be dealt with head on not re-lived with the old failures of past politicians.

"We must never be afraid of the truth and seeking real justice for all victims.

"My wish and drive for the future is to see the whole borough prosper, with real jobs paying living wages, and our schools from early years to education for life giving our children the best start in life and the best opportunities.

"We can work together for the best results for all into our future."

Allen Brett said: "I am appealing to the Labour group as the candidate with experience and knowledge who has contacts at GMCA level, which is an increasing part of the job.

"My aim would be to provide continuity after the sad resignation [of Councillor Farnell] and hopefully have an inclusive administration.

"Nothing is taken for granted, we need the next generation to be thinking about what we do next.

"A strong team is vital to take up all the challenges that are constantly being presented to us."
